Dear Readers and Advertisers

August is traditionally the month for holidays. Schools terms make it so which used to coincide with factory closures and harvest time. The rationale for the month has changed over time but it will take a lot of blue sky thinking to change the August holiday habit of most people’s lifetimes. Of course millions will be taking to those blue skies and airports will be especially busy. Many of those flights will be crossing the Atlantic Ocean but will any of those hundreds and thousands be thinking of a centenary that has somewhat fallen under the radar. It is one hundred years since the first crossing of the ‘big pond’ by the British aviation pioneers – John Alcock and Arthur Brown. They set off from St John’s, Newfoundland in their adapted Vickers Vimy bomber and sixteen hours later they landed in County Galway, Ireland. They had with them a small amount of post which of course became the first of billions of airmails that have criss-crossed the oceans ever since. Thanks to the inventive aircraft engineers of Vickers of Crayford and many others and the brave pilots who flew these early machines, we can enjoy the freedom of the skies to get to our various holiday destinations.

Not everybody is jetting off to foreign climes of course. ‘Staycations’ are popular and there are many local events to enjoy. The We Are Beams charity which supports disabled children and their families, hold their Beams Bake Off on Friday 2nd August at a Princess & Superhero Party in Hextable. To book a place, call Emma Cox on 01322 668501 or email emma.cox@wearebeams.org.uk. Meopham Art Group opens its Annual Exhibition on the same day at Meopham Village Hall and the Ellenor Hospice stage a Summer Fayre at Meopham Leisure Centre on Sunday 18th August. For cyclists Sevenoaks Council is running professionally led bike sessions at Brands Hatch circuit on the 14th of the month which should get you in shape to take part in the Lions Club ‘Annual Bike Around Brands’ on Friday 16th August 2019, a wonderful family event which raises thousands of pounds for the Ellenor hospice and other local charities. Of course if the whole holiday thing is getting you down and the kids are driving you mad, why not get along to Bluewater where former Britain’s Got Talent Runner Up, Jamie Raven, is hosting his first ever Making Magic Workshop and Theatre until the middle of September. He loves to show children his tricks of the trade and you never know he might make them disappear!
